BIOPHILIA Series #1:
Introducing Marco Vernaschi's work-in-progress


In February 2012, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture named Marco Vernaschi ambassador of Italian Excellence in the World, for his achievements in Arts.
His last work, Placebo, was exhibited in 2011 at the 54th Venice Biennale then in St. Petersburg, Buenos Aires and in Rome, at the MACRO. Vernaschi’s previous works with the Pulitzer Center received several awards, including the World Press Photo.

For the first time in Tokyo, Marco Vernaschi will be introducing his current work-in-progress, Biophilia.
The project explores the reconnection with nature as an aftermath of the general disorientation we're all living as humankind; in these peculiar times of structural crisis several people are turning to nature in different ways, the latter being an instinctive phenomenon resulting from the evolution of our DNA.

Biophilia is certainly an ambitious project which goes beyond the traditional boundaries of visual arts; it will include a series of museum and urban installations, community and educational events as well as a show, featuring Argentinean actress Juli Zeta. The whole project, that will be launched mid' 2014, has been conceived under a participative perspective, so the audience will be invited to contribute.

The Tokyo Institute of Photography and 72Gallery present a preview of Biophilia curated by Marc Prust. The artist will talk about the project and its developments during an open lecture.

2012年2月、マルコ・ベルナスキは、芸術や人文学における優れた功績から、イタリアの外務省および文化財・文化活動省が任命する“Ambassador of Italian Excellence in the World”（世界におけるイタリアの卓越大使）に任命されています。
彼の最新作品「プラセボ（偽薬）」は2011年に第54回ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレで、その後、サンクトペテルブルク、ブエノスアイレス、ローマ現代アート美術館にて展示されました。ベルナスキがピューリッツァー・センターと共に制作した過去の作品は、世界報道写真大賞を含む複数の賞を獲得しています。
マルコ・ベルナスキは東京で初めて、現在制作中の作品「バイオフィリア（生命愛）」を発表する予定です。
私たち全員が人類としてさまざまな方向感覚の喪失を経験していますが、その結果として自然と結びつくのだということが、このプロジェクトでは取り上げられています。つまり、構造的な危機に陥っているこの独特の時代、私たちのDNAの進化がもたらす本能的な現象として、さまざまな方法で自然と取り組む人たちがいることが表わされています。
「バイオフィリア」はビジュアルアートの従来の境界を越える、実に野心的なプロジェクトです。そこにはさまざまな美術館や都市のインスタレーション、地域的・教育的イベント、アルゼンチン人女優フリ・セタが主役を演じるショーが含まれる予定です。プロジェクトの全容は2014年半ばに発表される見込みですが、参加型の視点の下で構想が練られているため、観客による寄与も歓迎されることでしょう。

Marco Vernaschi

Born in Italy in 1973, Marco Vernaschi is based in Buenos Aires since 2005.

In February 2012, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture name Marco Ambassador of Italian Excellence in the World, for his achievements in Arts and Humanities.

His last work, Placebo, was exhibited in 2011 at the 54th Biennale di Venezia (Venice Biennale) Italian Pavilion, in St. Petersburg at the Karl Bulla Historical Photography Foundation.
In 2009 Marco began working with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, documenting the major illegal activities behind narcoterrorism. In the Project West Africa’s New Achilles’ Heel, Marco focused on cocaine trafficking, in Guinea Bissau, documenting how criminal networks led by Hezbollah and Al Qaeda control drug trafficking in Africa, giving insight on the aftermath of this phenomenon at a social and political level.

Again for the Pulitzer Center, in 2009, Marco started an international campaign to raise awareness on Maternal heath, with the project Dying for Life, revealing the dire situation of maternal mortality in the Sub-Saharan African region. In 2010 Marco worked at his third project with the Pulitzer Center covering Child Sacrifice and organ trafficking in Uganda, revealing the business behind this fraudulent phenomenon.

Through 2006 and 2008 Marco worked in Bolivia, documenting the early stages of President Evo Morales’ new policy on coca crops, showing how the indigenous people living in the Chapare region are forced by the circumstances to deal with drug trafficking on daily basis. The resulting story, “Bolivia: Broken Promises”, was described as unprecedented by the New York Times.

In 2006, Marco covered the tin war in Bolivia’s Altiplano, documenting the fratricidal conflicts among miners and its aftermath with the documentary “Condemned to Repeat”. In 2005 he covered “The Bitter Taste of Salt” on the daily struggle of the Quechua salt-miners living in the northwestern salt flats of Argentina.

Marco’s work is published in several major art magazines, including EYEMAZING, and La Lettre de la Photographie. His documentary works have been featured worldwide by STERN, TIME Magazine, National Geographic, GEO, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine and Sunday Times Magazine, among others.

1973年イタリア生まれ。2005年よりブエノスアイレス在住。
2008年～2010年にかけて、ピューリッツアーセンターからグラントを受け、アフリカにおけるナルコテロリズム、サハラ砂漠南部における母性死亡率の現状、ウガンダにおける子供の屠殺や臓器売買をテーマにしたドキュメンタリープロジェクトなどを手掛ける。
2010年、同センターで手がけたプロジェクトの1つが、世界報道写真コンテストでストーリー部門1位を受賞。
2011年には、シリーズ「Placebo」が、第54回ベニスビエンナーレのイタリアパヴィリオンにて展示されている。
2012年2月、芸術や人文学における優れた功績から、イタリアの外務省および文化財・文化活動省が任命する“Ambassador of Italian Excellence in the World”（世界におけるイタリアの卓越大使）に任命されている。
